Research FindingsResearch studies show the positive impact teaching handwriting has on the areas of the brain related to literacy development.
In a 2014 analysis of more than 14,000 students' handwriting screeners completed over 3 years showed high end of the year test scores using HWT curriculum. Study conducted at University of Indianapolis measured effectiveness of HWT in 1st grade classrooms. Test results show that HWT was effective at improving memory, orientation, placement, size, start, sequence, control and spacing skills. 2011 study at East Carolina University used the Get Set for School HWT curriculum in a rural Head Start and results found that using the program students made significant improvements in pre-writing, name-writing and fine motor skills finding that adding it to the Head Start program would be beneficial. Pilot study in OT practice used HWT and found that teachers were convinced that the time that they had spent on handwriting instruction made huge difference. Also served as a way for general education teachers, special education teachers and occupational therapists to collaborate on basic writing skills. |
