Curriculum Overview
Handwriting Without Tears is a developmentally-based program designed to make handwriting fun and easy to learn. Through multi-sensory activities children learn how to create letters and numbers. Pre-K and early elementary students can learn by making letters using wood pieces, listening to song and acting out letters, using slate board and wet sponge and other sensory activities.
It is designed to be taught in 15 minute lessons broken down in three phases: imitation, copying and independent writing. Students learn to create capital letters first and then move to lowercase letters when mastered. All letters are taught in small groups based on similar formation starting with the easier letter groups moving to the more difficult to create.
This handwriting curriculum uses double lines instead of the traditional three lines. The purpose of the 2 lines is to keep it simple for children and have the letters place more naturally. Small letters fit in the middle space, tall letters go in top space and descending letters go in the bottom space.
